The Former Sergeant’s Mess

Cavalry Road, Colchester

This was last of the buildings to be restored as part of former Cavalry and Le Cateau Barracks buildings that were in or ownership.

Having suffered years of neglect, the building had been severely affected by a dry rot outbreak which had seen most of the internal woodwork destroyed. Much of the internal plasterwork had also been removed to prevent the spread of the dry rot fungus.

The roof was replaced, the external brickwork restored and repointed and the heads and cills to all the windows and doors restored. Many of the windows had been affected by the dry rot and these were replaced or repaired.

We converted the building into just five, large two bedroom, two bathroom apartments. There are three apartments on the ground floor, two of which will have private courtyard gardens. On the first floor there are two further apartments including number 18 which has a magnificent living room with an ornately coved ceiling which despite having collapsed in places was restored to its former glory by specialist craftsmen.

Whilst the exterior of the building has been faithfully restored, the interior offered the latest contemporary fittings, with fully fitted kitchens by the luxury maker Alno and high specification bathrooms with Hans Grohe fittings etc. All the units have gas fired underfloor heating systems as well as heat recovery air systems. Each apartment has two parking spaces.
